it is my hope we have is a bill the president can sign into law. the time of the attacks, you indicated was going on in egypt and yemen. no one could have imagined that we would have the arab spring. what might we do as members of congress and how might we move forward with the nations of the arab spring so that is the way we can prevent these kinds of things from happening in the future? >> it is excellent question, congressman, and deserves a very cockle answer laurent and the time i have. let me make three quick points. the cannot retreat from, and give up on, turn our backs on this new arab spring revolutionary countries and regimes. they are very new. most of them have leaders that have never run anything. they have come from backgrounds where they are suspicious of security because it was a dirty word. through them in jail and harass them and their families. we have to do some work. the work requires the stay engaged. we have to do a much better job helping rebuild security apparatus that can be used. we had a terrible assault on our embassy

but it is not enough to change the law. we need cops on the beat to enforce the law. that is why today i am nominating mary jo white to lead the securities and exchange commission and renominating richard cordray for the consumer financial protection bureau could this guy is bothering me here. as a young girl, mary jo white was a big fan of the hardy boys. i was, too, by the way. as an adult, she had a career the hardy boys could only dream of. she brought down john gotti, and she brought down the terrorists responsible for bombing the world trade center and the embassies and africa. that is a pretty good run. you don't want to mess with mary jo. mary jo does not intimidate easily, and that is important because she has a big job ahead of her. there is much more work to be done to complete the task of making sure that investors are better informed and better protected going forward. and we need to keep going after irresponsible behavior in the financial industry so that taxpayers don't pay the price. i am absolutely confident that mary jo has the confidence and resolve

[applause] cities alone cannot reduce gun violence by themselves. we are doing everything we can but still losing the battle thanks to the proliferation to guns in our nation. our story is not unique. mayors everywhere are dealing with this problem. they use resources which we should be using to educate our children, create jobs and revitalize our cities. in an open letter to the president and the congress sent three days after the newtown massacre we urged immediate action and over 200 mayors signed on to that letter. we called on the president to exercise his powers through executive orders and the congress to introduce and pass legislation to make reasonable changes in our gun laws and regulations. specifically, we called on congress to one, enact legislation to ban assault weapons and other high-capacity magazines that is now being prepared by the senator. two, streng
